'''…tell Wind and Fire where to stop,' returned madame; 'but don’t tell me.''' Charles Dickens, A Tale of Two Cities

In 1842, Dickens and his wife travelled in the USA and Canada for 6 months.  On his return to London, Dickens began writing American Notes.  Two years later, in 1844, Dickens and his family toured Italy, with Dickens returning briefly for the publication of The Chimes.  After moving back to London, he set up his own amateur theatrical company.  His next tour of Italy took place in 1853, when he was accompanied by the famous writer Wilkie Collins.  The pair later worked together to write a play, The Frozen Deep.    Between 1866 and 1869, Dickens toured England, Scotland, Ireland and America, reading his work to the public.
